Soldier Pile Walls

When you wish to construct soldier pile walls, the piles are installed between five and eight pile diameters, depending on the soil condition. The soil in between the piles is typically held by shotcrete or timber lagging. Soldier pile walls are the cheapest, fastest and most straightforward to build and typically used for temporary works. They are however not suitable in areas of high water flow or pressure.

Contiguous Pile Walls

Construction of contiguous pile walls involves close spacing between the piles, typically 100 mm. The soil in this instance temporarily self-supports owing to arching. Contiguous pile walls are usually used for permanent applications. They are suitable for soil in which the groundwater lies beneath the highest point of excavation.

Secant Pile Walls

The construction of these walls requires the installation of a guide wall to ensure the piles are in the right place so they could properly interlock. A secant pile wall uses interlocking female and male cast piles to create a retaining wall. The female or primary piles are installed first followed by the male or secondary piles to form a continuous wall. Though costly, secant pile walls are more durable and can be installed on the hard ground.
